Design considerations

Arbordeck has set out a list of design considerations that you should look into before you get your decking project underway.

Safety and position are things you should look to tackle first. Both may become issues depending on whether the deck is to be primarily used by adults or a place for the whole family to enjoy.

Also take time to consider your plan, as this should incorporate any features you wish to include in your decking from an early stage. This covers any sandpits, swings, hot tubs, pergolas, ponds and storage planters you hope to set up around your enhanced outdoor space.

If you want your deck to be in the sun for as long as possible during the day, don’t forget to incorporate natural sun and wind shade into your design too.

On top of all of this, thinking about the future of your decking is advised. If you are considering adding a heavy structure such as a shed or hot tub to the area at a later date, for example, you will need to use the correct strength of support timbers at the outset. We advise you seek the help of a professional installer to discuss the best options for your project.

Design considerations will also have to be deliberated when you intend to construct in changes of levels. When it comes to carrying out a decking project on a sloping site, we recommend you consult a professional installer.

Meanwhile, a means of access will need to be in place if the location of a deck would interfere with any manholes or drains.

The proximity of the ground to your deck will impact on the treatment of the timber you use too, so be sure to check your deck timber has been treated properly. Visit our timber preservation page for further advice about this.

When it comes to how your decking will look, you may have a preference for the appearance of smooth or grooved boards. However, using a combination of both can enhance your deck design just as effectively. Take a look at our decking gallery for inspiration.

Then there are balustrades, which can sometimes be a decking design afterthought. Opt for a classic or contemporary style though and you can influence the feel of your decking. You will find plenty of choice within our comprehensive decking products range.
