How to buy the perfect deck

Lounge area using Trex Transcend Gravel Path

A recent study by Aviva showed that a massive 85 per cent of UK residents have undertaken some kind of home improvement project during the COVID-19 lockdown – and 52 per cent of people have spent time improving their garden.

We’ve felt the impact too, with requests for samples of Trex decking soaring during the past two months; one thing’s for sure, Britain’s gardens will be looking better than ever!

Decking is an excellent way to improve outdoor areas, however much space you have available. Trex in particular creates a low-maintenance and beautiful feature in your garden, and will last for many years to come – so even if you don’t expect to have as much free time on your hands next year, your outdoor space will look fantastic.

If you’re considering making a start on your decking project this summer, but you’re not sure where to start, we’ve put together this guide on how to buy your perfect deck.

Step one buying a deck: find the right decking for you

A Trex deck is an investment for the future, so you want to be sure that you’re happy with buying the decking you choose, from finding the right colour to choosing the product that best suits your needs and budget.

We would highly recommend spending some time looking for inspiration on the Arbordeck social media channels and on our website, where you can find lots of information on the full Trex range. You may find that you have a preference for a rich, multi-tone deck that mimics shades found in nature – in which case, Trex Transcend is the best place to start. But if you want to keep your budget under control, and you think your deck would be better with a single-toned appearance, Trex Enhance Basics is the right choice for you.

Order samples of the boards and colours that catch your eye, and test them out in your garden. Remember that colours can look different in bright sunlight to shade, so check them out in all weathers. Consider the type of garden furniture and plants you might want and find a decking colour that will complement them, and consider whether your house looks better with a traditional wood tone like Spiced Rum, or a modern grey like Clam Shell.

Find a local TrexPRO installer

Properly installed, your Trex deck will last for many years to come, so it’s worth finding an installer with a proven track record. Our TrexPROs undergo an evaluation before being invited to join the scheme, so you can be confident that you’re working with an expert.

TrexPROs will also be able to share their past work with you, so you can gain some inspiration for your own deck: installers are able to create stand-out features that you might not have thought of, such as the stunning four-pointed star on Simon Thomas’ award-winning project. They can also advise on use of lights, railings, multiple levels, and how to best incorporate features like hot tubs or ponds.

Many of our TrexPROs have built up excellent relationships with their local building materials merchant suppliers so can offer competitive rates on the product and a fast turnaround too. A good merchant may also be able to put you in touch with an installer, so it’s worth asking your local Trex stockist for recommendations too.

Take the plunge – and relax!

Once you place your order buying a deck, a whole system comes to life to get your deck to your front door as efficiently as possible. Your installer will order the materials through their merchant partner, or via our dedicated Trex sales team, and we’ll ensure that the stock is picked and despatched from our warehouse in a timely manner.

Our ‘Warehouse on Wheels’ delivery system means that we’re able to ensure ‘just in time’ deliveries to the local merchant with fleet tracking and route optimisation to reduce impact on environment. And our team is on hand to answer any questions you might have, or to arrange any additional materials you might need, to ensure that you get the deck of your dreams.
