Why the Right Decking Subframe Matters

When people imagine a new deck, they usually picture the finished result: beautiful Trex composite decking boards, stylish outdoor furniture and somewhere to enjoy the sunshine.
What they rarely think about is the structure underneath.
Yet the decking subframe is one of the most important parts of the entire project. It provides the stability and support that allows the Trex decking above it to perform as intended.
If you are planning a new composite deck, it is worth looking beyond the finished boards and understanding what is happening beneath the surface.
A great Trex deck starts long before the first decking board is installed.
What is a decking subframe?
A decking subframe is the supporting structure onto which the decking boards are installed.
Depending on the design of the deck, it may include joists, bearers, posts, supports, blocking and other structural components. These must be correctly specified and installed to create a suitable base for the decking above.
Once the Trex composite decking boards have been fitted, most of this structure is hidden from view. However, it continues to support the deck throughout its service life.
Why is the decking subframe so important?
Trex composite decking must be installed over a suitable, properly constructed subframe.
A well-designed and correctly installed subframe helps to:
- Provide a stable base for the decking boards
- Support the anticipated loads placed on the deck
- Maintain the required joist spacing
- Support borders, breaker boards and other design details
- Allow appropriate drainage, access and airflow
- Enable the decking to be installed in accordance with Trex guidance
If the subframe is incorrectly specified or installed, it can result in movement, uneven boards and problems with the finished deck.
What can a Trex decking subframe be made from?
According to the Trex UK installation guidance, Trex decking can be installed over a suitable substructure made from timber, composite, aluminium or steel.
The correct material will depend on factors including the deck design, ground conditions, required height, structural loads and the environment in which the deck is being built.

- C24 structural timber pressure treated to UC4
- ArborJoist recycled-plastic subframe components
These are two different types of product and should not be confused with one another.
What does C24 UC4 mean?
When discussing timber decking subframes, C24 and UC4 describe two different characteristics.
C24 is a strength grade
C24 identifies the structural strength grade of the timber. It relates to properties such as strength, stiffness and density.
UC4 is a treatment class
UC4 refers to timber that has been treated for demanding external applications, including situations involving ground or freshwater contact.
Specifying timber simply as “UC4” does not describe its structural strength grade. Likewise, specifying “C24” does not explain how the timber has been treated for its intended environment.
The important distinction
C24 describes strength. UC4 describes treatment.
For timber subframes in demanding outdoor applications, both the required structural grade and the appropriate treatment class should be considered.
C24 timber pressure treated to UC4
Arbor Forest Products supplies C24 structural timber pressure treated to UC4 for decking subframes and other demanding external applications.
This combines the structural grading of C24 timber with treatment appropriate to UC4 end-use conditions.
The dimensions, spans, supports, fixings and overall design of any timber structure must still be suitable for the individual project. The use of C24 UC4 timber alone does not replace the need for a properly designed and correctly constructed subframe.
What is ArborJoist?
ArborJoist is a recycled-plastic subframe system designed as an alternative to timber.
Because ArborJoist is manufactured from recycled plastic, it is not described as either C24 or UC4. Those classifications relate to timber strength grading and timber treatment.
ArborJoist offers several practical characteristics for decking installations, including:
- Resistance to rot and weathering
- Low water absorption
- A splinter-free surface
- Recycled and recyclable construction
- A range of joist and post sizes
The correct ArborJoist size, support spacing, fixing method and layout must be selected for the proposed deck design and anticipated loads.
Following the Trex UK installation guide
Whether the subframe is made from timber, ArborJoist, aluminium, steel or another suitable material, the Trex decking must be fitted in accordance with the current Trex UK installation guide.
For a standard residential installation, Trex states that joist centres must not exceed 400mm. Different requirements can apply to diagonal board layouts, commercial installations, stairs, picture-frame details and areas carrying concentrated or unusually heavy loads.
The guide should therefore be checked for the exact Trex product, board direction and deck design being installed.
The subframe must also provide a strong, securely fixed base, with appropriate consideration given to drainage, ventilation and access beneath the deck.
Always use the current Trex UK installation guide.
Installation requirements can vary according to the Trex range, board orientation, use of the deck and individual design details.
Joist spacing for Trex composite decking
Correct joist spacing is essential because the decking boards rely on the subframe for consistent support.
For standard residential decking installed perpendicular to the joists, the joist centres must not exceed the maximum stated in the current Trex UK installation guide.
Closer spacing may be required where boards are installed diagonally, where the deck is being used commercially, or where the design includes stairs, borders, breaker boards, concentrated loads or other special features.
Additional framing may also be needed to support:
- Picture-frame borders
- Breaker boards
- Board ends and butt joints
- Posts and railing components
- Steps and stair treads
- Changes in board direction
Your installer should refer to the current Trex guide before designing and constructing the frame.
Drainage, ventilation and clearance
A decking subframe should not simply be placed into position and covered with boards.
The design must allow for suitable drainage and airflow, while helping to prevent debris and standing water from becoming trapped beneath the deck.
The required clearance and ventilation will depend on the location and construction of the deck. The Trex UK installation guide should be followed, alongside applicable building regulations and any project-specific structural requirements.
Protecting a timber subframe
Where a timber subframe is used, Trex Protect joist and beam tape can provide additional protection to the tops of joists, beams and other vulnerable areas.
The self-adhesive butyl tape helps reduce moisture penetration around fixings and protects areas where water can otherwise sit on horizontal timber surfaces.
Trex Protect is an additional protective measure. It does not replace the need to specify timber with the correct strength grade and treatment class for its intended use.
It is not only about the decking boards
Trex composite decking is engineered to provide attractive, long-lasting performance with less maintenance than traditional timber decking.
To get the best from it, every stage of the installation must be properly considered.
This includes:
- Assessing the site and ground conditions
- Designing a suitable supporting structure
- Selecting an appropriate subframe material
- Using the correct joist spacing
- Providing suitable drainage and airflow
- Supporting all board ends and design features
- Using approved or recommended fixing systems
- Following the current Trex UK installation guide
The Trex boards create the finish you see and enjoy. The subframe provides the carefully planned support beneath them. Both play an essential part in the completed deck.

Looking beyond the finished photographs
It is easy to admire a completed decking project. The colour, layout, borders and finishing details are usually the first things people notice.
However, some of the most important work happens before the transformation becomes visible.
The frame, levels, support spacing and structural preparation may never be seen once the deck is complete, but they all contribute to the quality of the finished installation.
